MK says a horse at grass needs hair in its ears to keep out flies, etc. but a stabled horse doesn't. But I have seen a horse absolutely tormented by hay seeds and sawdust in its clipped, bare ears. You should just gently pinch the two edges of the ear together and trim off the hair that sticks out. You can still keep the horse tidy looking. I don't believe in clipping off all their whiskers and eye lashes either!
