I was asked recently how I set up a horse to learn an indirect or "neck" rein. So I thought that would be a nice little quick tips piece. I'll try to expand on it with a fresh, young horse in the near future.

I trail ride mostly, and I don't put rules on what I can or cannot use as tack, or how I ride in any given situation. No one gives you style points going up a hillside, or down a wash.

And they do work alright for me. :D Plus I's just a poor little weaklin' lol. There was an old vaquero "trick" that lesser vaqueros would use, where they would sore up a horse's neck a bit, so it'd be extra sensitive. Not exactly a wise thing, as frankly it was abusive, but it did create a desire to move away from the pressure of that rein touch. Sad, huh?

For the record, neither Morris, nor myself, agree with either of those practices.
