Horses which do not trust the rider or handler will reflect that? in their responses and temperament; self-preservation is instinctive, ingrained withing the deepest part of their saurian brains. By: tulatularosa. on 19 Jan 12, 03:36:24 I am in the process of turning a rescue mule? of Skippper W lineage back into a normal reacting mule , who completely broke down from a Clinton encounter. This may work with a horse, although from any equine's point of view this must seem a series of odd tasks, but with a very intelligent mare mule it took 14 consistent months of normal requests to get her to trust a person. This video helped me understand what had caused her very odd reactions. Not every technique will work with everything

...and you don't ... By: FredTheCloud. on 26 Jun 11, 18:53:32 ...and you don't end up with a suppressed horse. You end up with an equal partner that willingly recognizes that you are the leader. Not their master they must submit to for fear of being run ragged. You end up being their leader, but their friend as well. Some one they can play with but also someone they want to please. I rarely need anything more than just myself when doing ground work with my horse. My horse half the time treats work in the round pen as play time.?

The first farrier I used when I got him tried bullying him into behaving. My horse got worse every time he came out. The third and final time I used that farrier my horse threw out the guy's back. Every time my horse manages to push my buttons, I just have to tie him somewhere and just walk away, because once I start getting into a mindset to force him? to do what I want, it's just game over. Join up is? not something that can be properly utilized with a horse that does not change gaits and direction easily without the person having to move in to apply pressure. Proper join up is something that can be done in any space - round pen, arena, pasture. It does not force submission. My horse is anything but submissive. With him our relationship is very much so I ask, I don't demand. Bullying is not something...
Proper join up does ... By: FredTheCloud. on 26 Jun 11, 18:37:13 Proper join up does not run? run run run run the horse until they submit, nor is it a one way street when it comes to respect. When a horse really doesn't want to come in, there is a point long before running them hard when it's time to just move on to something else and come back to the round pen later. Respect in join up is a two way street, the horse respects the person's space, and the person respects the horse's space as well. It's only when the horse moves into the person's space

You can see how this horse allow itself to leave and voluntary come back WITHOUT submitting (something which isn't allowed in "proper" join-up as you call it) The horse can of course "recover" from join-up and? be playful, but the concept of join-up is to keep the horse submited and the be a "leader" (or just a "bully" the horse has to obey )

I have used join-up myself,? and know how it's done and the concept of it. The horse has only a few opitions. Run og submit. Respekt is earned through trust, not pressure. And respekt is not subordination and obedience. It has to be mutual. And forcing someone to rund, is not mutual respekt. Beacuse join-up is about submition, it will suppress the horse' ....

By: FredTheCloud. on 23 Jun 11, 19:00:10 obviously you have never seen join up used properly if your reason for thinking it has not been used with this horse because the horse is "happy and playful." Join up is a lot about choice when used properly. The horse has to choose to accept? the person as the herd leader, and choose to want to come in and be near that person and to follow them freely. I personally use join up and I can assure you my horse is quite happy and playful

Therefore, the horses reward at the end of this video is coming back? to its trainer. And because it hasn't been hit with the stick as a punishment, this horse will never associate the stick with anything negative, and therefore will not go 'dead' to its touch. The horse will simply view the stick as an aid, similar to the way that a rider uses his/her legs to give aids when riding.

You push the horse? away to make him/her believe that you are a good herd leader. Once the horse has decided you are a good herd leader, it will give you signs that it wants to be friends, and that's when you let the horse come back to you.

If the horse does something wrong, it is hit with the stick. Therefore, the horse associates the stick with negativity and pain.
Throughout this video, the horse communicates with the trainer through body language. You see the way the horse licks its lips constantly? That's a sign? that the horse wants to 'become one' with the trainer and be with him.
I'm no expert, but ... By: Horseylover118. on 08 Dec 10, 19:08:26 I'm no expert, but this is the way I've interpreted it:
I can understand your point, but in this video the stick is not used as a punishment or even as an aid. Here, you see the stick being used as a guide. The main aids are coming from the humans general communication (body language and voice commands). The stick itself is simply used to give the horse more precise aids where necessary, if the? horse gets confused or doesn't understand what the trainer wants.
