A dressage saddle should have a deep seat, a longer flap for the leg, long stirrups and knee rolls if they are preferred by the rider. Find out why every dressage saddle is specific to each rider with helpful advice in this video on horse training and dressage.

To become a proficient horseman, and effectively communicate with the horse, the rider must learn how to use their legs. This video, provided by the Louisiana State University Ag Center, introduces several riding exercises that can help strengthen a rider's ability. I took everyone's comments into consideration and did only flatwork for 2 weeks. (I don't take lessons). This is as good as he has done so far, we still have a ways to go, though - but this is much better! note: I am riding without stirrups for most of the video - ignore my weird position, I am working on it! What would we score on a "Novice" event/training level dressage test?
you're horse has ... By: bullschinadoll. on 16 Apr 07, 20:18:20 you're horse has plenty of potential, i suggest working with a dressage trainer to pull that potential out of him. before you cramp his big body into a "frame," work on impulsion and energy. pull your leg back and scoot him out from under you. you have wonderful eq, but try to not use your reins unless absolutely necessary. the reins aren't what get your horse into collection, seat and impulsion will make him round up to you. let him go forward into contact. overall lovely,? though.
A green horse you ... By: xsummercoconut. on 26 Feb 07, 05:05:40 A green horse you should be working on rythym first of all, make sure he has a good steady balanced forward trot, working from his hind end. Dont even worry baout collection just yet hes still green. Collection is not just making your horses neck round. It ususally wont even happen until he is strong enough.
I think you have great position already, that will improve even more once you get stirrups on your saddle again. Message? me back! :)
You need impulsion ... By: GallopingGreys. on 16 Feb 07, 00:40:01 You need impulsion first to go round and collect, which you really dont have. I suggest you stop sitting for so long a pretty green horse, its not good for his back yet because he? isnt going round. Your legs are also way too forward, which isnt helping him let his movement come out from the front or back.
I can say right now ... By: DillyMonty. on 13 Dec 06, 00:59:11 I can say right now you need to increase? the energy in his trot and make his rear reach up farther underneath him. Right now all yours doing is restricing him to a jig. You want him to start wanting to reach for the bit by lowering his neck and allowing him to streach. Make sure you have alot more trot then what you are showing here or you will never have him "on the bit".
I tend to shrug my ... By: mollymillymoo. on 19 Nov 06, 19:03:23 I tend to shrug my shoulders and relax my elbows to loosen my arms, I have to same problem with my horse in that we are learning to go on the bit but there is tension there sometimes, before he is warmed up properly. Try doing circles with? your arms one at a time in the trot, and other basic arm movements. He has a nice trot but you do seem very restricting and it means he can't engage his hind quaters as much as he could. Hope that helps. :p
I would like to add ... By: fairgeek. on 21 Sep 06, 02:14:29 I would like to add that this was only 5 minutes of the ride, my mom didn't record the majority of the time when I was posting or riding on a loose rein. She liked the way this looked. Figures. But I posted it anyways.?
I'd avoid working ... By: Poneh. on 20 Sep 06, 09:34:54 I'd avoid working in sit trot? at the moment, as rising tends to relex them more. I have to admit though, his canter has improved greatly :)
He is lacking ... By: Poneh. on 20 Sep 06, 09:30:50 He is lacking impulsion. I used to have the exact same problem with my horse, and sitting the trot usually makes everything more tense. If you look he's not tracking up and the whole picture? just looks generally tense. To fix the problem, i'd ride him on a very light contact for a while, trying to get him to stretch down into the bridle. From there i'd be asking for a bigger trot, although as Catgirl stated, remember half halts and a positve outside rein.
He is forward, he ... By: fairgeek. on 18 Sep 06, 00:01:35 He is forward, he will canter at the touch of a feather. That is why I restrict him so much and it looks? tense. His canter, although this video wasn't his best canter is much better than his trot. I need suggestions on making his neck looser and me keeping my arms looser.
