I learned to ride on a 30-year-old Quarter Horse mare that was easily 16hh, and I never even? touched a pony until I was comfortable trotting & posting on my own! I've also taught lessons for a few years, and it's the little ponies that are always the ones that take advantage and run off with kids (with a few exceptions, of course). I'd much rather have a safe horse that's too big than a pony that's dangerous!
