I perfer to leanr over the horse and have someone lead for about the first 5 rides but everyone is differant and you did nothing wrong! all horses are differant too. I saddle trained one mare and it was like she had been born with a rider, yet another mare gets very tense and you need to go VERY? slow with her at first till she relaxes. both mares were raised in abusive and neglectful homes!

Thanks for your comment. We don't train all our horses to do this but this horse's owner wanted him backed so we rode him in harness. We start off driving them and then walk up the shafts (as you can see when I dismount and get back on the carriage). It is? useful for instance in driving trials - we have seen four-in-hand grooms walk up the pole to fix harness rather than get penalties for getting off the carriage, so it helps if the horse gets used to it during training.
