*Rock with your horse on the saddle
*Keep your back up straight and lean back a little while rocking back and forth
*Make noises or repeat a word to push the horse to canter as long as you need it to
*Before telling your horse to 'wo'; tell them 'steady' then 'wo'.
*Stay relaxed and let? your legs loosen a bit while rocking on the saddle, stiffening up will just make it harder..

That being said, some horses have an easier time letting go in their back in a rounder frame, and once the back lets go then the hind legs can come more under. It is very difficult and sometimes counter productive to try to push hind legs into a tight back. Stretching forward has it's place but not so much if we are trying to get the hind legs under.
@UltimateDQ you ... By: diamondblue16. on 02 Jun 10, 15:16:24 @UltimateDQ you cannot help a horse come through his back more by pulling his head in. It ALL starts in the hide end. If she wanted to allow him to? stretch his back she should let him stretch FORWARD on a long rein.

@LinkandZeldalover ... By: UltimateDQ. on 02 Jun 10, 13:57:08 @LinkandZeldalover What you are describing is a disunited or cross canter. A counter canter is when you are intentionally on the "wrong" lead, it is a good balancing and collecting exercise. Collecting (in a nutshell, in a dressage sense) is when the horse transfers more weight to the hind legs and makes the steps shorter and higher, it doesn't have so much to do with the head although? the horse does have to be round to do it.

Counter canter is basiclly a canter thats somewhat messed-up. like the back legs have a different lead than the front legs. it makes it rough and un-comfortable.
A? collected canter is when the horse "collects" its head. or arches its neck and brings thier chin to there chest. Its often used in dressage.

I have an over excited horse, and when I try canter, she has a more forward going canter, but its like shes jumping over? and over in a gallop pace, how can I control her since she goes too fast and bouncy, I always loose my balance :L

I'm going to try? this next time I go see my horse. I get nervous when cantering just thinking he might slip or something...It definitely does feel faster than it actually is though, which is why I get nervous...thanks for this video clip!

@reallyloooovehorses? With what?
By: TheTimeTells. on 02 Jan 12, 00:06:08
@CuteRobyn10 No, that isn't your fault in the least. Your instructor needs to know what horses they're putting their riders on.? Glad you dropped that instructor or whatever, they sound incompetent.

Can someone help me? I'm going to a riding holiday. I watched some videos about it and when I see the people there getting their horse to canter, they use both legs? I haven't been riding since the start of December because of the christmas and new year holidays and my instructor isn't very good so I only go out hacking (I don't get lessons). I've still to master the canter but I'm getting? confused on which leg to use? The outside leg she says, but other people use both. I work with lazy horses.

By: TigersUnleashed. on 01 Jan 12, 17:33:40
what's the difference between a sitting and a posting trot? why would u want to? do a sitting trot anyways? posting trot would be alot easier for your horse, wouldn't it? sorry, I'm new at horses.

@CuteRobyn10 We dont have any riding schools anywhere near us but a neighbor? has been letting me feed and pet his horses.
By: Logandstump1287779. on 30 Dec 11, 17:03:51
@CuteRobyn10 Jumping isn't too bad. small jumps are super easier just wait till you work you way up to 2'3". Then you really need balance or you will fall.(i would know from falling off a huger horse? due to no balance). But if you master the canter and have good balance jumping will get easier.
By: CuteRobyn10. on 30 Dec 11, 16:55:23
@wolfsrule100 You don't need your own horse to enjoy horse riding? You can join a horse riding school and some let you help out? and learn how to take care of horse
By: CuteRobyn10. on 30 Dec 11, 16:52:05
@TheTimeTells Same with me, my old instructor rushed me into it and I could barely sit-trot! Plus, the horse I was riding is really old (It's retiring this year) and could barely canter for? 1 minute so it was hard for me, and I'm always thinking it was my fault..
By: CuteRobyn10. on 30 Dec 11, 16:49:53
@horseops Well.. The canter is soo much fun but you obviously have no confidence in horse riding, so instead of learning how to? canter, learn how to boost your confidence because the horse will know if your scared/nervous, and they will also get nervous.
By: CuteRobyn10. on 30 Dec 11, 16:45:25
@reallyloooovehorses Did you even watch the video? Well, if you have she'll tell you but for tips: *Rock with your horse on the saddle *Keep your back up straight and lean back a little while rocking back and forth *Make noises or repeat a word to push the horse to canter as long as you need it to *Before telling your horse to 'wo'; tell them 'steady' then 'wo'. *Stay relaxed and let? your legs loosen a bit while rocking on the saddle, stiffening up will just make it harder.. That's it :P

When you watch someone else riding, it looks slow and easy, but when you're the one actually riding it's a bumpy, fast road sometimes.. I can barely sit-trot on a big horse, it's easier for me? on smaller ponies to sit-trot but their canter is much bouncier.. hehe. I think this is hard, wait till I go onto jumping!

Wow, this video actually helped? me to MAKE my horse canter! Haha, i used to kicked with both legs in the wrong place and this video has taught me not to (:
