Friesians are just so boxy that they can't extend their shoulder as well in the extended trot. Jasper looks really good in his though. He's a big guy, so he seems to really have to try hard to switch those leads. He has to pop up his back end or something. I think friesians are probably hard to get on the bit and go behind the vertical because they have a naturally thick and arched neck. so its hard to tell when they are and aren't on the bit.

how do we know they are happy?... it is always a 'best guess' but I think when you do things at liberty or bridleless the horse certainly has opportunities to leave or do as they prefer... but yes, people could be cruel and forceful even in liberty work... I guess the main thing is how willingly they choose to show up the next day for more of the same!!

That pony was having fun in this video, or I've never been on a horse!

In Europe (were we tend to ride a horse and watch their backs) the rule is: 15% of the weight for horses, 20% of the weight for coldblood pony's.
Sure, it'll carry what ever lands on his back (noble animal).. but it's back will not last too long. Remember that horses are physically NOT build to carry a lot of weight. Not having a problem with too much weight is no argument.

Some breeds carry weight better, and are said to be able to carry more like 25% of their weight. I have owned ponies and horses - I see no problem with the pony performing under that rider.

I would love to see more horse people try training and riding their horses without bits -- causing their horses pain.

She was put down on Jan 25 after breaking her leg in a paddock accident. They had retired her from competition in 2009.The world has lost a great horse. I have watched this video at least 30 times.

thats cause it just LOOKS easy. its SUPPOSED to look easy. but its not. if you had been riding for two years, you wold be doing your very first horse show and you would be doing the walk-trot tests. i admit that dressage is not the most dangerous equestrian sport, but it takes the longest to learn. if you were hoping for something fast-paced and dangerous, than look up show-jumping and equestrian cross-country. riders die every year doing those sports.
