The height of the wither and the width of your pony's back will dictate which pad is best for your stated purpose: to provide comfort to your pony's back or to provide lift to the saddle. Gel pads give cushion but? no lift. Risers give lift. Best to consult with your local tack store.

No, the? saddle pad ... By: Inkbunneh. on 05 Dec 11, 07:40:40 No, the? saddle pad is made to protect the saddle (at least when it comes to english saddles), so the leather & the wool (if it's stuffed with wool that is) won't get ruined by the sweat, salt isn't very good for the leather & it can make the wool lumpy, but a saddle pad is not needed for the horses sake, only for the saddle (then one can always discuss what is more comfortable for the horse if it's a hot day and it gets all sweaty, slippery leather or wet fabric?)

Many people also untack in a stall, or have someone help them. Anticipating that your horse will run is wise, so you can take all steps to head him off at the proverbial pass. He may start to change his behavior if he never has the opportunity to run. Don't ever give him this opportunity, and over time, you can change his behavior.

Here is another Equestrian Neightion video showing how to untack a horse. You would untack a horse or pony in the inverse order of how you tacked up: take off the bridle first, then the saddle. Safety first! Make sure you are in a cross tie area or a stall to ensure a safe environment for yourself and your horse.
