The AMA was behind it, but does not operate it. Many doctors quit the AMA and rejoin for a bit a few years later. My uncle was a doctor (orthopedic surgeon) and he would always try the slow, non-invasive methods before surgery. He would refer people to chiropractors all the time, or try physical therapy before cutting a person open.
